Stormy Sea

a poem by Olivia Kunaski

I hope you love the truth
even when it is ugly,
because it spills out of me
like champagne past a cork.
Truth etches itself deeper onto my face
each time I try to conceal it,
fills my notebooks with ink & leaves them
scattered all over the floor,
floods your ears
with words no one should ever hear,
makes my voice tremble
& my hands dance nervously across the keys.
The lies are too easy.
They leave me still,
& safe,
& cold.
So when I’m pouring out my soul
haphazardly
& you can’t find a straw to grasp,
know it’s only because I want you
to know every inch of this stormy sea
& love her for all she is.
Not only on the sunny days.
Not only from the shore.
