Genre: Urban Arts’ Creative Workshops increase access to arts education for high school students by offering free, workshops in written, visual, and performance arts. Hosted at the Milwaukee Art Museum, Walker’s Point Center for the Arts, Cr8tv House and Satélite Gallery, the program provides meaningful opportunities for students to create, discuss, and study art in professional settings.
Workshops include guided gallery tours, hands-on studio sessions, artist talks, portfolio development, and student-led initiatives that foster creativity, critical thinking, and leadership. Students explore multiple art forms, from writing to performance, while developing essential skills for the arts economy. Professional artists guide participants in experimenting with new mediums, critically analyzing collections, and engaging in discussions about artistic techniques, themes, and cultural perspectives.
Workshops with professional artists encourage students to take creative risks. While other program offerings, including chats with doers in the creative ecosphere, build ownership and confidence. The program culminates in a public exhibition at Walkers Point Center for the Arts, where participants present original works alongside written artist statements reflecting on their process and themes to the community.
Through ongoing reflections, feedback, and portfolio review, students will grow in creatively, strengthen communication, and critical analysis. Ultimately, the program cultivates personal growth while preparing youth for educational and professional success in the arts.
