Departure, by Samihah Pargas

where will the words come from
when you go
when you go

when you left/ the
world no longer spoke/ to me
and all thoughts followed you
out our front door
my body/ began to grieve
on other bodies/ with new faces--
didn't ask for names/ in
new places/ anywhere
with enough noise
to save me/ from
the danger of
quiet ones

when you left/ the
only sound to call for you
was the dripping/ bathroom/ tap
and I didn't dare breathe
because/ your silence/ was so
cutting/ it would open my chest if

I
inhaled/ exhaled
inhaled/ exhaled

inhaled
still.
no air entered
this home we built
after you left us
a
house
in
ruins
