Too Much for Him to Handle

a poem by Anita Smith

He couldn’t hold her love
In his hands.
It burned him
Because he was not used to a love
So pure
Without expectation,
Lacking judgement of him,
And
Unconditional.
He let it go
And couldn’t grasp it again.
It was too unfamiliar and unusual
So he went back to loving the superficial
And continued to feel alone.
