The Beautiful and the Damned

a poem by Autumn Wolf

Occasionally one
Is lucky enough to catch a glimpse of them,
Has the good fortune
To see happiness at its finest.

Surely you have seen them before?

They wander down our streets,
Laughing and smiling under starry skies
Two lovers amongst the bustle of fair Verona.

They waltz cross our ballrooms,
Spinning and swirling under bright candlelight
Two lovers amongst the bustle of fair Verona.

Quickly, my friend, hurry to catch
A glimpse, a glance of the couple
Waste no time to see the joyous hope
For the love is swift to be damned.

Hold close the reddened flush of the face,
A high, brilliant emotion in the eye,
The buoyant shimmer of the soul –
All so lovely to see.

So lovely to see
What is to be damned.

Surely you have seen them before?

They wander down our streets,
Laughing and smiling under starry skies,
Two lovers amongst the bustle of fair Verona.

They waltz down our ballrooms,
Spinning and swirling under bright candlelight
Two lovers amongst the bustle of fair Verona.

Quickly, my friend, hurry to catch
A glimpse, a glance of the couple
Waste no time to see the joyous hope
For the love is swift to be damned.

Hold close the reddened flush of the face,
A high, brilliant emotion in the eye,
The buoyant shimmer of the soul –
All so lovely to see.

The beautiful, who are also the damned.
