A Review: Laughs in Spanish

Right from the start, Laughs in Spanish, a play directed by Anna Skidis Vargas, was attention grabbing, diving right into the heart of emotion.

The play reminds me of some of my favorite people as well as some of my favorite things about being Latinx - the food, the music, the dancing, and also creative problem solving. Written by Alexis Scheer, the comedic storyline was balanced with relatable moments of complexity that mother and daughter relationships often have. This was evident from the, “Don’t make that face, it will get stuck like that,” scoldings to the way maternal figures hide emotions. I could see myself easily in Mariana’s place. I would highly recommend this show as a fun mother or grandmother date that will provoke lots of risas, and a few tears.
