Coal Mine

A poem by Kelcy Taylor

“A diamond in the rough.”That’s whatI’ve been called. Butmaybe, I’m justanother lumpof coal in thecoal mine. Thanks to you, that’s all I see.Maybe, in fact, this wasn’t yourintention. What a lie of a lifeyou lead. And thanks to you, that’s all I see.One at a time, love. You can’thonestly expect me to keep upwith all of your lies at one time. What a shame, love. I could’vebeen everything you ever wanted, that you never asked for.I’ve spent my whole lifebuilding up walls, and Ifound comfort in my shell, that you think is so repulsive. But little did you know,if you’d cracked it, youwould have found the pearl.“A diamond in the rough.”That’s whatI’ve been called. Butmaybe, I’m justanother lumpof coal in thecoal mine.“One at a time, love.” Featured image (modified) CC0
