“Awakening Enoch”

a poem by Nathaniel Wilder

Ground-nesting birds thrusting their existence

Beyond the threshold of earthen apartments

I’ve stumbled upon a minefield

Doubling as a lacrosse pitch for those with better lodgings

My racing steps plaster an eviction notice on the soil

A new moon offers me nothing for my trouble

Staring beyond my frozen breath as I stagger past

Sporadic charcoal shadows

The whimper of feathers pushing through air

The laugh of god And I mimic
