A Poem about the Sea
A poem about Victoria Zammit
You asked me to write a poem about the sea.
I –
Who live on a rock
Where the sun never fails
To swelter –
Spent weeks struggling
Around the words
I should be using
To describe the sea.
And all I could think of
Was the memories
The sea brings me.
Delving into untold secrets with friends
On the sea shore
As the sun disappeared over the rocks.
Clinging to my brother
As we dived down
To try and touch the bottom.
Celebrating the end of exams
With my classmates –
Too young to drive yet,
But old enough to get a cab home alone.
You, on the sea shore
With shining eyes,
Exclaiming how wonderful the weather was
But all I cared about
Was how nice you looked that day.
You asked me to write a poem about the sea.
I hope you’ll like what this is instead.
