The release of the Femme collection includes art work commissioned by GUA from the hands of Sasha Bartoni, a Black femme artist from the US. Her subject is black women, their hair, their sisterhood all gathered together in the variant hues of blackness while also capturing our vibrancy.
Sasha and Nakeysha GUA’s owner and creative director partnered to develop the vision for Femme Literati: Mixtape covers.

The direction for this artwork was a collaboration between the brilliant artist and Nakeysha in 2019. We still have some prints left from this run.
Sasha passed away in 2021 due to complications with child birth. Losing her was an enormous loss to the art community, and undoubtedly her friends and family. I am thankful to have worked with her and her absence I am sure will never cease to pain me. The books that art was a cover for is sold out. Once I figure out how to move this line forward in the most respectful way to Sasha and her family, I will again accept submissions.
It’s kinda like therapy writing that. I have been in some version of frozen since an illness I had in 2021. Right around my surgery, I learned about Sasha and I truly was so heartbroken. Her loss was such a shock.
As we move into 2023, I am working on not freezing and facing my emotions. So here is this art, from a time that I was so lucky to work with Sasha Martoni.
