Directions: Using the Mentor Texts above, identify each instance of simile and metaphor. Next, select the metaphor/simile that stands out for you.  Using the line that you chose, write three four-line stanzas. Each stanza should begin with the line you choose for example: 


  • CHOOSE A LINE

    “neckties and handbags, flapping in the wind”

    “screamed like doves moaning the bombing of Milan”

    “Life is a broken-winged bird”

    “…in Vegas looking across at a green sunshadeat 3:30 in the morning…”

  • WRITE FOUR STANZAS

    Each stanza should be four lines.

    Each stanza should begin with the line that you chose.
