CHICANA FEMINIST MOVEMENT
My overall topic of my project was the Chicana Feminist Movement. I chose this topic because I feel as if I was affected personally by cultural gender roles in society in the Latinix community and am striving to make a change to destroy social norms. Some subtopics that I chose to include in this project was feminism, latinx culture, and the idea of empowering women to choose their own path. Feminism is the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes. Latinx cultures heavily follow the social norms similar to the social norms of the 1960s; housewives, caretakers, and usually do not follow through with their own personal career interests as the man of the house is considered the “breadwinner”. I want to raise awareness towards social issues as such since it is still taught from generation to generation within the latinx community. The title of my project as a whole is “si se puede”: a spanish phrase that translates to “yes, it’s possible”. My collage was named “si se puede'' because it represented latina women overcoming the social gender roles. My poem was titled “Mami” because it was my point of view of observing my mother and how her stereotypes personally affected me and my view of my future. Lastly, my video was called “java my joint” as it was the name of our “cafe” in our skit regarding an everyday common situation regarding racism.
Mami
I gazed at my mother as she rapidly paced the kitchen.
The aromatic smells of savory chile filled the air,
Awaiting my father from work,
The news played in the background to
Cushion the gaps of silence.
I see my mother, and I see Cecilia Vega.
Both from the same background,
Both on different foregrounds.
One lives the successes of her ambitions and dreams,
While the other fulfills her assigned role in society.
I take pride in my culture,
But my prepositioned role treats me
As a vulture;
Stripping away my freedoms,
My goals,
My ambitions,
Myself.
I gazed at my mother as she rapidly paced the kitchen.
Awaiting my father from work.
