Critical Writing about Art x Culture.

You will have flexibility in your writing in terms of style and topic. You should, also run your topics by me to make sure, I feel it is aligned with our focus. I may ask question to clarify what your directions is. Please don’t take my questioning as there is something wrong. I just want to understand the fullness and direction of your thought on the matter to make sense for myself. We can always schedule one on ones. Feel free to push boundaries, to use your home languages, to be creative.

What I appreciate in critical writing about art and culture is an analysis.

Questions to consider:

  • What can be taken away (learned) from the piece?

  • Who and what is included, as well as who or what is not?

  • What cultural references are highlighted?

  • Who is being spoken to and who is not?

  • Were do you make connections in the subject with self, the world, or other media?

  • What is the subject causing you to question?

  • What is your story of spending time with the subject?

  • Please help me think of other questions to consider. I will also add to this as I continue to turn this over.

General format should align with MLA format and 1200-1500 words.

Articles can be based on anything related to art and culture. We have focused on critical analysis of art and critical analysis of aspects of art and culture fields. Genre was named Genre: Urban Arts bc of the the necessity to include and break down barriers between the arts, so I am interested in all of it.

Some areas to write in that align with the residency’s focus:

  • Decolonize art spaces

  • Center BIPOC criticism and analysis of art and culture

  • Deconstruct barriers around what is considered “fine art”

  • Highlight the prominence of BIPOC influence on culture

  • Make art and cultural criticism more accessible, relevant, and digestible to the general public via our site, print publications, and media
