LOVERS
a poem by Robert Beveridge
Therewere two birds lying
inthe puddle by the side of the road.
They'dbeen there for days.
One'slegs were entwined
inbarbed wire; the other
seemedto be unhindered.
Drivingby, one arm
aroundyou on the way home
froma movie
Wepass that puddle
Ilook at them lying there
andwonder
Howfar the bird had to fly
withbarbed wire on its feet
before coming to rest.
