Winter Scene
a poem by Anthony G. Amsterdam
Everythingis canceled: schools shut,
airportsdown, cars on the Interstate and
Bypassnothing more than menthol butts
ditchedby bored, impatient
wintergods that wait their turn,
stampingsnowy boots in cemetery
parkinglots. Another flurry
makestheir dead-white faces churn.
Oldpeople will die tonight,
droollichening their chins
inhobo towns and hospitals
wherebackup power stalls
andpale necrosis spins
arachnidwebs. A strobing light
marksthe crash scene of an ambulance
whoseshattered driver never had a chance.
Colordisappears. The sky is blinding silt.
Andsuddenly we know
deepin the mind=scold floe
how transient is this world we've built.
