“Tiptoeing at Friendsmas”

a poem by Rich Glinnen

Surrounding me

At last night’s dinner:

Cold sores

A ring of landmines

Guided my fork;

I circumvented crags of

Gnashed Napoleon

To avoid a dawn

Colored scarlet In bruised

Sultry-lip confusion:

The mattress springing me to

The bathroom,

Mirror flattening, reflecting

Beer-spit tales of

Slovenly necking, pig passions,

3am blunts with a sundry of

Neck-haired stoners;

A pustule prophesizing

Weeks of hermitage

Till fading within—

A whale melting into the

Sapphire sea,

Secret to science,

Beyond margins of study,

Revealing its pulse

Only when breaching.
