The Safe Place
a poem by Kip Zegers
Awriter, brilliant on schools,
saidin surprise, that among children,
hefelt safer than walking, a man
onSouth Bronx streets. With 50 kids,
justoff an A Train, I felt
athing brush my cheek, a dark face
shonebetween cars picking up speed.
Oneof the girls came up
witha heavy paperclip,
“Hewas shooting you! Mr. K--,
youbest be careful down here…"
Anothervoice, "You walkin' us all
theway to Lenox in this heat? Shoot,
you better try and get us started."
