Sliding Scale
The first two therapists I saw were both pastors. While living with my parents, it was hard to even convince my mom to let me see a therapist, so a person of the clergy with a psychology degree was a good compromise for them. The therapist I see now feels like two huge ocean's difference from the way I was introduced to therapy. Dr. Laura cares about my progress and addressing the issues I'm coming in with rather than how they relate to my relationship with god or my own spiritual journey. The more I think about it, my work with Dr. Paul and Dr. Anne wasn't difficult because it was difficult. It was difficult because it was too easy. Too easy to not really address my issues. Too easy to go there once a week and sit for an hour pretending I've made progress. It is a real smack in the face difference knowing now how effortless really good difficult therapy can be.
