Jean Jacket Girl

a poem by Lakshmi Supriya

You tip-toed down the aisle
of the library.
I, slumping lump.
You, floating fairy.

Wherever did you find that denim?
And how perfectly placed is it,
quilted over your heart-red floral dress.

Where are you going?
To read?
(I assume).
You read!
(I assume).

I bet you have a heavenly bed.
Is that where you do it?
Next to your lamp?
Breathing like that.
Eyes wide open.
A full-bodied red.
Chapter after chapter.

Oh, Jean Jacket Girl, bring me with you.
Take me out of this place.
Let me come
and watch you read,
and blink forever at your face.
