February

a poem by Stephani E. D. McDow

tear drops turn

my forced zen

into fluid emotion

and as it kisses my lips

I gave into its rosy breath

and lose focus

this can’t give

that high that I seek to get by

and I look into its eyes

amazed at how life

is so exaggerated there

and believe

as it grazes my nose

and stimulates my awareness

so why can’t you be

this real to me

inebriate my love with truth

and dedicated soul

yet upon tasting salt tears

exchanging spirits with pale wine

I try to understand my pain

try to console it, try

to embrace it, try

to withstand its bellows

or demand its peace, try

to not succumb, try

not to fade

but what’s the point

you have lost focus
