Coalmine

a poem by Kelcy Taylor

“A diamond in the rough.”

That’s what

I’ve been called. But

maybe I’m just

another lump

of coal in the

coalmine.

Thanks to you,

that’s all I see.

Maybe, in fact, this wasn’t your

intention. What a lie of a life

you lead. And thanks to you,

that’s all I see.

One at a time, love. You can’t

honestly expect me to keep up

with all of your lies at one time.

What a shame, love. I could’ve

been everything you ever wanted,

that you never asked for.

I’ve spent my whole life

building up walls, and I

found comfort in my shell

that you think is so repulsive.

But little did you know,

if you’d cracked it, you

would have found the pearl.

“A diamond in the rough.”

That’s what

I’ve been called. But

maybe I’m just

another lump

of coal in the

coalmine.

“One at a time, love.”
