Years in the making, and it’s finally here! A collaborative effort and Afro- Cuban exhibition comprising nine incredibly gifted artists; Gabriel Estrada, Victor Mora, Isolina Limonta, Jorge Luis Figueroa, Orlando Bos Rodríguez, Miguel Ángel Espinosa, José González, Magnolia Moré Abreu, and Lino Felix Vizcaíno. Each seeks to convey and translate the Afro-Cuban experience, using various techniques ranging from 4D sculpture, to extensive multi-media paintings honoring cubism.

Did you know Africans were the first to abstract realism? Using inherent creative skill to produce masks and other carvings strongly defines the art form known as cubism. Don’t believe me, look it up!

Vibrant colors and abstract characters stage spiritual practices and familial pastimes. Adept hatching methods illustrate one’s association with nature, while prancing watercolors, and ink breed epic scenes of power, resistance, and hope-filled promises. Monochrome photos capture playful, celebratory moments, and signs of compassion. Somehow beautifying the ugly reputation of transculturation, we are welcome to examine the personal perspectives of Afro-Cuban culture reflecting faith, joy, and community gatherings.

These esteemed creators have committed numerous years to the arts and utilize their platforms internationally, to broaden awareness of a global, Black presence. We dwell EVERY FUCKIN’ WHERE!!! The multi-national impact of our ancestors being snatched and shipped here and there has morphed into a poetic, universal movement that haunts the colonizers responsible. This intercontinental occupancy has been a secret for many underprivileged black US citizens, educated by under-funded public schools, deliberately to discourage and control. For all these reasons and more, I am beyond elated to witness this collection in a sacred residence for black and brown originators; 5 Points Art Gallery & Studios. Having worked and visited many art spaces, I have never felt so empowered and seen. I imagine the masters behind Nuestro Cuerpos, Nuestro Almas can attest to this fact. Combining this selection of dope ass art with the illumination and reputation of the space that houses it, equates to a union that I’m certain will leave viewers in awe.

I’m a big fan of all shows at 5 Points –this show ranks top 5 so far– however,  this exhibit hits differently. Because I’m a dork, I read actual books and watch documentaries for kicks, I know Africans have roots in unlikely places, but this is evidence of how widespread the Trans-Atlantic slave trade and colonization are. Shows like this lighten divisive lines and unveils a great sense of cultural pride while globally unifying generations of oppressed people. It’s glorious! Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to an authentic cultural experience. Check out Nuestros Cuerpos, Nuestros Almas, now showing at 5 Points Art Gallery and Studios, Mar 26, 2023!
